Bike & Build Conducting Accident Review

With the 2015 summer rides complete, the Board of Directors of Bike & Build is undergoing a review of the accident that occurred on our Maine to Santa Barbara route in July. If you are unfamiliar with this accident, please see details here. The ultimate goal of this review is to evaluate (1) the contributing factors to the accident and Bike & Build's response to it; and (2) if there are changes we need to make to our safety procedures, training curriculum, and route selection process for future riders and leaders.

The Board has assigned the task of this review to three of its members (see below), plus two staff members serving in advisory roles. This subcommittee has identified a list of key individuals and groups that we'll be speaking with regarding the goals listed above. If you believe you have a valuable perspective and would like to participate, please email

The Board will be conducting this review throughout the month of October. It will extend its timetable if it deems necessary. At its culimination, the subcommittee will present its findings and any potential recommendations to the Board for its consideration. We are deeply grateful for your continued support of the Wanninkhofs, Andersons, and the broader Bike & Build family throughout this process.
