I'm Maria Araneta, 21 years old, and from Montgomery Village, MD.

I transferred from Boston University after my sophomore year and I am graduating (on time) this spring from Tulane University with a B.S. in cell and molecular biology.  You may ask if I am planning on going to medical school with that fancy-schmancy degree?  We shall see.  Right now I'm excited to graduate because of this AMAZING trip, but also not so much because I'll have to become a real person and relinquish the good life for a full time job right after.

I've been involved with both community service and sports my whole life.  At BU I went on an alternative spring break to Hotlanta, where we packaged and delivered food to those in need.  I also participated in Student Food Runs-  picking up and delivering donated food to local pantries and shelters.  This past summer, I spent two months in South Africa teaching in one of the local townships.  The kids were amazing and the country was so sooo beautiful.  It was also here I first heard about Bike & Build, and haven't been able to get the idea out of my head since.  I've wanted to volunteer with affordable housing for a while, especially once I relocated to NOLA.  I plan to start getting involved this semester.

Also, the challenge of biking over 4,000 miles just sounds exciting.  My biking experience is pretty limited, just to/from school and some cross training.  I've been getting into endurance sports since I began running half marathons a couple years ago.  I'm pretty excited to explore more of the west (despite the mountains we will have to be climbing), especially Colorado and Utah-- two states I haven't been to yet.

Other than that, I play club soccer and tutor math/science at one of the local elementary schools.  I enjoy traveling, finding good dive restaurants, climbing mountains, mario kart 64, being outside, hangin' out, meeting new people, and being legit for raising money for AH and biking across the US!  It's gonna be epic.
