Raleigh NC is truly a city of extremes. No further than 2 miles from the most expensive, sought after real-estate in Raleigh is District 8 housing that has been filled to capacity since it was built. I am surrounded with this dichotomy daily, and it hurts. Why should I cast a blind eye in the direction of others who by chance alone were born with less than me? My name is Edward Dobner, and I believe that affordable housing is among a few of the direst causes faced by the western world. I?m 21 and surrounded with friends involved in affordable local food and housing. Bike & Build naturally came across the lips of several of my cycling friends, some of which have ridden with Bike & Build in past years. Biking across the country has always been of interest to me, but after hearing about Bike & Build and its combination of riding and affordable housing work, the notion of selfishly wasting 2 months doing nothing for others seemed like a moot point. Studying as a senior of Industrial Engineering at North Carolina State University has filled me with excitement and potential to reach out to the greater community. As an active member of the NCSU Cycling and Triathlon clubs and a member of The Athlete?s Foot Running Team I am not concerned about the cardio-respiratory endurance aspect of this challenge. Rather, I am excited about setting aside my racing mindset and enjoying this incredible experience with the other people on the ride. As an avid cycling fan, I see Bike & Build as truly an organization that meets the challenges of the modern world with gusto; not only promoting self-less service for the betterment of others, but also showing the value of physical fitness as a critical portion of a well rounded individual The organizations that I have invested time in are: Warmth for Wake; a group that cuts wood, splits it and delivers it to houses in Wake County that are heated by wood in the winter, Interfaith Food Shuttle; a community based organization that delivers extra food from restaurants and grocery stores to soup kitchens and food banks, and Interfaith Hospitality Network; a church based network that sponsors and fosters families who were recently evicted from their housing until they have sufficient capital to get a footing in the housing market again. I hope that you will allow me to be part of this wonderful and exciting cause, and I can?t wait to start peddling.
