“Do you want to stop?” asked my Dad.
“Nope, I have to do the whole thing.” I insisted, sniffling a bit.
“Are you sure?” questioned my dad, “It’s still a ways back to Bar Harbor, and I have the Burley [a wagon attached to the back of his bike].”
I was seven years old. My goal to complete the loop from Jordan Pond House back to Bar Harbor had been rudely interrupted by a tumble off my bike. My scraped knee hurt. I eyed the Burley…my youngest sister fast asleep inside…drool coming out of her mouth. Dad had engineered a rack on the back for our bikes so when we got tired, or scraped our knees, we could hop in.
 “Nuh uh…I’ll go catch mom!”
I took off down the gravel trail. So many of our family vacations centered around biking and camping that I found myself surprised when my peers told me of the hotels and resorts that they stayed in. By that time I’d grown to appreciate and prefer my family’s method of vacationing.
I was a student-athlete at Cornell University where I majored in Biological Sciences and ran cross-country and track. Aside from getting a little dizzy from always running in circles (i.e. track), I had a great time, and got out on a bike now and then!
I’m currently working as a Professional Teacher’s Assistant at Duke University. It’s an awesome job, and I absolutely love my students. This past summer I worked as a co-manager of Pura Vida Hostel in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. I just applied to graduate schools in the fall so I’m crossing my fingers!
A good friend of mine completed Bike & Build two summers ago, and has inspired me to want to do the same. Just hearing him talk about the projects he did, people he met, and all the biking got me musing about how I could schedule the time to be able to do it as well.
I would love to use my passion for adventure to influence the world in a positive way.  I couldn’t have had many of my experiences without a safe place to grow up in and it would be an honor to provide that for someone else.  Bike & Build offers the opportunity for people to couple their love for athletics with the desire to improve the lives of others. It isn’t a challenge to be taken lightly and I couldn’t be more excited to have the chance.
