Hi! My name is Dan Halpert and I grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut.  I am currently a senior at Tufts University in Somerville, Massachusetts.  I will (hopefully) be graduating in May 2012 with a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Engineering.

At Tufts, aside from spending long hours in the Engineering School learning about pollution and the environment, I'm a proud brother of Theta Chi Fraternity, host a weekly radio show at 91.5 FM WMFO Tufts Freeform Radio, and am involved in Tufts Freshman Orientation CommUnity Service (FOCUS).  In FOCUS, we lead groups of 8 incoming Tufts freshman around Boston and do community service.  I have led two groups and coordinated the program before the start of my junior year.  I am also involved in Tufts Programming Board, which plans all major events on campus including concerts, comedy shows, school dances, lectures, and much, much more!

I’m a chronic sleepwalker, a laid-back, relaxed person who gets super intense when the Red Sox are playing, an arachnophobic computer nerd who loves a long walk in the woods, an environmental advocate who can never seem to remember to turn off the lights in my room, a trumpet-guitar-piano-ukulele-banjo-trombone playing extrovert. I love all words with the letters Q, X, or Z in them (thanks in part to my love of Scrabble), all numbers that are prime, and love proclaiming my initials as a victory call (DH!).

A friend of mine participated in B&B last summer, and ever since he mentioned the program to me, I literally could not stop thinking about it.  When else in my life will I be able to do something as novel as biking from one end of the United States to the others? Pairing this incredible experience with a more than deserving cause, affordable housing, made it too good to pass up.  I've spent the vast majority of my life in a 200 mile stretch of the New England coastline, so I am most excited to go to other parts of the country, see what there is to see, meet who there is to meet, and do what there is to do.

Neighboring my hometown, and just a few hundred feet from my house, is Bridgeport, CT, where one can witness the affordable housing crisis and high levels of homelessness first hand.  Growing up so close to that made me realize how much we take for granted the simple pleasure of a roof over our heads and that affordable housing should be granted to every person, regardless of their socioeconomic standing.  Although I do not have much experience volunteering for affordable housing, I am eager to help build homes and shelters across the country for those who need them.
