Hi!! My name is Elaina Grott. I am a currently a senior at Purdue University (I'm hoping to graduate in December 2013!) I am 20 years old and majoring in a little-known major called Entomology (the science of insects.) It's weird, but I like it! My favorite insects are cicadas and honey bees. If you want to know why, ask me! I will warn you that I might tell you more about bugs than you ever wanted to know... but the great thing about entomology is that people generally like hearing about bugs (albeit they’re also frightened of them.)

I heard about Bike & Build from a multitude of friends that participated in this event before me. I had three of my very close friends do Bike & Build last summer (P2S and SUS). After hearing about their experiences, I could not help myself from signing up. I feel a little guilty for going on an epic adventure this summer instead of earning money, but it's for a great cause and it is absolutely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!!! (That's my excuse.)

I joined Purdue Habitat for Humanity my freshman year and have been on the student board for the past three years. I was just elected chapter president this semester and cannot wait to expand the efforts of Purdue Habitat by serving as president. Habitat has taught me so much about how to communicate effectively, stay organized, recruit people to a cause, and so much more. The affordable housing crisis is vast and I am fortunate to be able to help make a difference in my community of Lafayette and the surrounding area. The thing I love about Habitat for Humanity is that the mission is not to give away free houses, but it is to lift people up by providing them a decent living space to raise their family. In Habitat, we are not merely building houses, we are building futures and that makes me so proud!

Biking across the country is an unfathomable challenge. I have been on bike tours before, including the Cover Indiana, an amazing 360-mile bike tour fundraiser across southern Indiana (yes, this is a shameless plug. Check it out!) Yet, I don't think there is anything that can completely prepare me for the adventure that will take place this summer. I can't even put into words how excited I am for the places I'll see, the people I'll meet, and the lives I'll help improve during Bike & Build 2013!!!!
