Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I grew up surrounded by California's beautiful landscapes. Hiking in the golden Oakland Hills, snow camping in Yosemite, and sailing in the windy Bay were my favorite activities. Since moving to the East Coast for college, I have remained active, although I am still not used to the humid summers and brisk winters! My DC Weekends are spent hiking and camping in Virginia or at least when I'm not doing my Arabic homework. After studying abroad in Jordan for nine months, I have faced academic and intellectual challenges; now I am ready to further test my endurance and strength. I discovered Bike & Build through my best friend, Nathalia. A week later, I postponed my job search and submitted the application with total certainty that I was ready.
I grew up volunteering through the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Spending time in animal shelters and soup kitchens broadened my view of the world and helped form who I am today. I furthered this public service by interning with government organizations, where I eventually hope to work. While interning for a state senator, I witnessed the obstacles to providing and obtaining affordable housing, particularly in my home of the Bay Area. Increasing gentrification and income inequality is forcing life-long residents out of their homes, destroying quality of life and the diversity of the community. While I have witnessed much of the planning and allocating of funds behind affordable housing, I want to be a part of the movement on the ground.
I have lived on both coasts, but have not had the opportunity to see much of Middle America. I look forward to connecting with communities and nature in my own country. I am most inspired by my family and best friend. My grandfather, Fred, is an avid biker and runner, which inspires me to keep active; especially as he did marathons into his seventies! My mother, father, and brother keep me active and always encourage me; I am so grateful for their support. I cannot wait to embark on this next adventure. I am ready for the blisters, tears, and long days, especially for a great cause and a dedicated organization.
I am so thankful for the support of my donors!
