Hello, World!

My name is Carmen Kuan, and I am a 25 year-old originally from Charlotte, NC. In 2013, I graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and immediately moved for a job with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Athens, GA. In my spare time, I cook (a lot), read, practice yoga, bike around town, play board games, volunteer, etc. Needless to say, I have a lot of energy to spread.

I first heard about Bike & Build at UNC through UNC Habitat for Humanity. The prospect of biking across the country definitely piqued my interest, but at the time I felt incapable of such a feat. Fast-forward five years later through a cancer diagnosis, college graduation, moving to a new town, and the rave reviews of Bike & Build of two acquaintances, and I am writing a bio for my Bike & Build application.

My motivation to participate in Bike & Build is two-fold: to promote affordable housing and to promote biking within communities. I am excited to build a community with other teammates, to build character within myself, and to build support for a worthwhile cause. I believe that change comes bit by bit, and I want to participate in the change of a community with each hammered nail or mile down the road. Plus, biking across the US would be an amazing feat of physical, mental, and emotional ability!

Why Bike & Build?
Everyone is entitled to the dignity, security, and stability that a home provides. Bike & Build gives the opportunity for folks to create functioning communities of people by providing affordable housing. Homes are where families, and or single persons, can find stability, dignity, and security. They enable people to focus energy towards goals other than where they will sleep or when they will be evicted. Productive and thriving communities start within both the physical and familial home!

Please consider making a donation to the Affordable Housing cause via my trip for Bike & Build! Here's what I can give to you for your donation:

$0 - $20: a personal shout-out on my Bio page
$21 - $50: a postcard sent from one of the many route destinations
> $51: a postcard and small souvenir from the trip
