Hey I'm Sarah! I'm a senior at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME studying biology, English, and education. I hope to one day be a high school biology teacher, but in the meantime, I intend to live my life to the fullest and experience all that I can. I've swam competitively for the past eight years and have loved every second of it (even the painful ones!). There's something to be said about accomplishing something you never thought you could--it is a feeling that is hard to describe, but completely worth it to discover.
I call Philadelphia, PA home, and this past summer I taught rising 9th graders in the Philadelphia public schools introductory biology. Every day was a new and unpredictable adventure. Talking about crazy summer experiences one day, a fellow biology teacher told me that her friend was biking across the country while also lending a hand at build sites periodically. It sounded like one of the most rewarding experiences one could ever embark on--not only would you be able to say you biked across the entire country, but you also had the opportunity to do something truly life changing for someone. As an aspiring teacher, affordable housing means so much more to me than just families having an affordable place to live. Having AH means that families can allocate their income to other important aspects of their life, for example education. I believe that lessening the burden on low-income families by providing them with AH will ultimately lead to a shrinking of the achievement gap since students from low-income families will be on a more level playing field as students whose families don't have to worry about housing costs.
Giving back to those around me is something I've always enjoyed doing and believed to be very important. It doesn't take all that much time to help others, and you never know when it will be you that needs help. Something I like to live by is the idea of "pay it forward". If everyone did something nice for someone else without the expectation of something in return, I believe that the world would be a much better (and happier) place.
