Hello! My name is Kristen Ewing. I am currently a senior at Cornell University studying Psychology and expecting to graduate in May 2014! At school I am a Varsity rower, a sister in Kappa Delta sorority, and guide for pre-orientation wilderness trips for incoming freshman students. In my free time, I enjoy running, hiking, and knitting. I've always been one to seek out the latest adventure and have spent most of my high school vacations exploring a remote area of the country, whether rafting in Utah, backpacking in Colorado, or dogsledding in Minnesota. Once I entered college I refocused my energy to academics and lost a bit of my adventurous drive. However, that spirit is back and I am ready for a big trip during one of the last times of my life that I will have few commitments!
While biking across the country is something that I have always had in the back of my mind, I am particularly excited about biking for a cause. I was first exposed to affordable housing issues my sophomore year of high school while volunteering in a small town in Utah. After seeing so many families struggle to make ends meet, yet while maintaining such a positive outlook on life, I was inspired to someday do something to bring awareness, support these families, and end the cycle to provide individuals with new opportunities for success. Especially as someone who has always had a comfortable roof over my head, I feel that it is my responsibility to contribute and educate others on this very pressing issue. Each rider who participates has the power to initiate a snowball effect through their individual networks and spread awareness and support about affordable housing in order to increase the number of educated individuals across the country who can help break the cycle. I am particularly excited to be part of this effort to improve this situation for thousands of people. Bike & Build will allow me to not only bike across the country, but to do it on behalf of thousands of individuals across the country.
I am beyond thrilled to be participating in Bike & Build. I have always loved traveling and hiking and figured it's about time I do some exploring on two wheels. I know that this trip will be mentally and physically challenging and I am looking forward to tackling it with other committed individuals as well as meeting some fantastic people along the way.
