Hi there! My name is Laura Anderson. I am from Staten Island, New York and I currently go to school at Cornell University. As an undergraduate I studied interior design and as a graduate student I am studying ergonomics and biomechanics. With these two things combined I hope to improve living conditions and the quality of housing for all people, everywhere. I believe that not only should your home be a safe and special place to live, your home should support the things we need to get done every day, no matter what means you have to do that.
I heard about Bike & Build through a friend and decided it was absolutely something I needed to do. I am lucky enough to have had the opportunity to stay in school another year to complete my masters and who knows if there will ever be another time in my life when I have the opportunity to do this again. In the past I have volunteered for Community Building Works Ithaca and have done freelance design work for a number of other organizations and charities. The Have a Heart for Kids foundation is one that is especially close to me, as I have volunteered for them with my mom from a very young age. After studying for about 5 years about how much impact the environment can have on a person, I can think of no better reason for why I should raise money for the Affordable Housing cause. However, no matter how much time I spend reading and researching something, I have always felt that in order to make a greater impact, I need to get my hands dirty myself. Additionally, after the tragic events of hurricane Sandy and seeing how much it affected my hometown, I quickly realized how things can change in the blink of an eye and how quickly your home and everything you love can be taken away from you. People who originally never had to worry about having a roof over their head were suddenly faced with a challenge and some had become part of a group that could be helped enormously with affordable housing.
While I never imagined biking across the United States would be something in my near future, I am most excited to see new states and explore things away from the east coast (as much as I love you, New York!). I am also super excited to build! One of my favorite parts about being an interior designer has always been construction (I definitely have an affinity for power tools).
